Tibet

China's Autonomous Region Tibet is often called the “roof of the world”. Situated on a high desert plateau with an average elevation of 4,000 m, it is rich of cultural heritage. Located between China in the north, Nepal and India in the south and Xingxang in the west, it covers a land area of 1.22 million square kilometers and a population of approximately 2.3 million.

In Central Tibet you can visit Tibet's beautiful, ancient cities as Lhasa, Shigatse (the seat of the Panchen Lama), Gyantse and Tsedang. You will have magnificent views of the turquoise Yamdrok Lake from Khamba la pass, standing at an altitude of 4794 meters above sea level. Tibet will give you an awe-inspiring scenery of the ever impressive Mt. Everest and you can see how nomads steer their herds of yaks through snow-topped mountain passes. This unique land is now easily accessible from Kathmandu (Nepal) and various parts of China.

In west Tibet you can find the sacred Mt. Kailash, a holy mountain and important pilgrimage for both Hindu and Buddhist religions. This mountain is also the source of the four great rivers of this region; The Indus, Brahmaputra (Tsangpo), Karnali (Ganges) and Sutlej. These rivers are all fed by the water of the nearby sacred Lake Manasarovar.

Time to visit:

The best time to visit Tibet is May till October, when the temperatures are higher. The winter months are usually very cold. Although the weather of the first and last months of this season is generally stable and clear, with cool temperatures during the days and nights below freezing. The least travelers visit Tibet during this period. July and August are usually warmer, but this is when the monsoon pushes beyond the Himalaya, swelling the creeks and coating the valleys with greenery and wildflowers.

Temperature and weather:

Most of the trips are crossing the dry Tibetan Plateau which lies in the rain shadow of the Himalayas and does not receive much annual rain. We schedule our departures to miss the monsoon season in Nepal and we should almost be guaranteed clear skies. The weather on the Tibetan Plateau during the day will be surprisingly mild and warm, around 20 degrees, while nights will be clear and cool with temperatures well down below zero. Although our trips are timed coincide the periods when the weather is generally good, be warned that weather in mountainous areas is notoriously difficult to predict, and short-lived storms can occur at any time of the year.
